A tropical oasis on the banks of the Endeavour River
Paperbark Retreat (formerly known as Barradise Lodge), is situated on the banks of the Endeavour River. This sprawling country lodge is wrapped in a large verandah, offering shaded outdoor lounge areas complete with fans, tropical gardens and resort-style swimming pool. The adults only accommodation includes four standard queen rooms, each with TV, ceiling fans, air-conditioning, ensuite shower and seperate toilet (toilet is next to the room) and one deluxe queen room with full ensuite (shower and toilet).
Queen Rooms
Each room features a comfortable queen sized bed, air-conditioning, TV, clothes rack and ensuite shower (toilets are next to rooms).
Shower Ensuites
Each room has an ensuite bathroom with shower, hair dryer, toiletries and basin. Toilets are located outside the 4 standard rooms.
Resort Style Pool
Cool down in the outdoor pool, surrounded by tropical gardens, then grab a book and relax in the gazebo or on the sun lounges.
Lounge Area
A communal lounge area is located adjacent to the kitchen, complete with TV, assortments of books, playing cards and board games.
Breakfast
Operating as a Bed & Breakfast, Paperbark Retreat offers a selection of local produce for breakfast. Additional meals available on request.
Indoor Dining Area
Adjacent to the communal lounge area is a large dining area, which can comfortably seat 8 guests.
Outdoor Dining Area
Paperbark Retreat offers plenty of outdoor spaces to relax, including the large outdoor dining area which comfortably seats 6.
Tropical Gardens
The lush tropical gardens at Paperbark Retreat, including palms and orchids, are great to explore for some peace and tranquility.
Fishing
Cooktown is unique for its close proximity to a myriad of angling environments, from the outer reef to the rivers – this is fishing paradise!

My partner and I recently visited Paperbark Retreat and it was the perfect little getaway we needed. Tony & Sue could not of been more accommodating, starting with a beautifully decorated room, freshly brewed coffee in the mornings and a campfire under the stars at night. It’s the perfect little mix of luxury & good old fashioned service! If you’re looking for a getaway & need a recharge definitely check them out. Looking forward to getting back there very soon!
We had the pleasure to spend some time at Paperbark Retreat, set amongst beautifully maintained grounds. Paperbark’s accommodation was well presented, comfortable and clean. The hospitality was second to none, Tony and Sue make you feel part of the family. We were picked up from Cooktwon Airport and within. 5 minutes arrived at the accommodation. It is located right on the river and within minutes of arrival we were throwing a line in – the Barramundi always taste better when you catch it! We will be returning.
I travelled from Cairns to Cooktown for a break and stayed at Paperbark Retreat. What a beautiful place. So relaxing and the hosts Sue And Tony were just such beautiful people. The property is just so nice. Everything was clean and neat and the pool is just amazing. The rooms are fantastic and the bed so comfy. They offer you cooked breakfast or or cereal and fresh fruit. I would and will recommend this place as a getaway to everyone and I would not hesitate in visiting again. Thank you Sue and Tony.
